Independant Radio

Independent Radio Company's - Production company's.

Production companys create and design content that other company's want, like the BBC or Key103. They make things that they Radio Companys can broadcast like TV Programmes or News or Documentaries.

They use such company's because it is allot cheaper for the them, this is because say if the BBC wanted a Documentary on Skateboarding, instead of getting all the equipment and paying people to record and disign it and paying for electricity they can just go to a Production company. this means they don't have to pay for all of the above but still get there documentary. this means the smaller production company will still make money can still employ people and the BBC wont have to spenda load of money.

If the BBC want a Documantary but they dont know what on they will pace it on there website and many different production companys wil see it and disign a ocumentary and say why they think it woul be a good idea to have on there Radio station or on TV.

The oranisation R.I.G are there  protect the indepndant prouction companys from bigger organisations suc at BBC. This is so the smaller company dont get used and get the right money they deserve. there are currenty 90 registered independant production companys in the UK at this moment in time.
The R.I.G alsoget larg companys t employ the use of indepedant production companys, this is so more peple get work and they independant productions companys dont go under.
There is also alot of competition in independa radio so the more work hey have done the more work they will get because they will be classed as more reliable and a better company.

Voulntry/Non Profit Radio

Hospital Radio: this type of radio is only played through out the  hospital and in its grounds. hospital radios are produced by the hospital and are usually worked by volunteered nurses or other staff. but other people can go and volunteer as well. Although some Hospitals are still managing  to run these radios, some have decided to stop running there own radio stations and start steaming live radios such as 'Gold' or 'Smooth radio'. This is because it costs so much for them to make there own radio station so if they are charging there patients so that they can listen to these instead of making the radios themselves this means they will be making money instead of loosing it. This means that 'Hospital Radios' are dying out and probably wont be around for much longer.

Community Radio:
Community radio use small radio broadcasting radios, this is because they don't have a licence to broadcast far and wide. This type of radio station is manly run by a set of volunteers often looking for experience in the area of radio and trying to get to grips with the environment and the equipment. Most of the funding for these types of radios are from sponsors or advertising, but a small amount come from Public donations.
The idea of a community radio is so that the people within the community can find out a lot more things about there specific area and that they don't have to listen to what is happening else where. This is also helpful because people might want to get more involved if it is within the community.

The negative side of community radio is that its funding has to come from 3 or more different places because they cant be funded for more than 49% from one original source.

commercial radio

Commercial radio stations serve local and regional areas, commercial radio is possibly he most popular in the UK,the radio has to have adverts on  i in order for it to make money to say running. with out these commercials, A lot of radio stations would have closed and there wouldn't be any where near how many radio stations as there is now.
Unlike the public service radios, commercial radios don't 'have' to be running, and with out them so many music styles wouldn't be played.

Each difdrent commercial radio stations serve different genres of music, this is because they all try to appeal to a diff rent set of ages, races and music styles. Most commercial radio stations try to find an area of music that is getting bigger(E.G. alternate rock, scene, indie).

The largest radio company is GlobalRadio, they own and buy many different radio stations. they borough a forma media group called GCap.

In order to be able to have a commercial radio station you need to apply for a licence on Ofcom. this is because the hold the rules and regulations for broadcasting.

____________________________________________

Commercial Radio is different to a PSB radio because they don't receive any money from the public. they receive all there funding through sponsors and things like advertising.
Also Commercial Radio is not obliged to make a radio station for all differing types of people. but the try to find a area in the market that is not catered for and make a station for them.
If there is already several radio stations for a certain type of audience, a Commercial Radio will be less likely to make another station for this particular audience.
There are many different types of Commercial Radio. there are regional types and national types.
There are many different types of Commercial Radios, for example a regional could be Key103 and a national one could be XFM. These radio stations are different because Key103 can only broadcast in the Manchester area and ave a limit to the distance they can broadcast, but XFM can broadcast through e whole of England. The licence fee
